The third round of the Porsche Carrera Cup France (PCCF) season, held last weekend at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, turned out to be one of the most intense—and bizarre—weekends so far for Alex Reimann and EST1 Racing. With a string of technical issues, including five engine changes and the unexplained disappearance of a full set of Michelin tyres, the team was put under serious pressure. But despite the setbacks, Reimann delivered the best performance of his Porsche Cup career to date.
The weekend started on the back foot, as persistent engine problems limited Reimann to just 13 laps across free practice, directly affecting his qualifying sessions. As a result, he started the two races from P13 and P14 respectively.
EST1 Racing team principal Raimo Kulli explained:
“Alex had to keep switching between his main car and a backup just to get any preparation done. With such tight time, it seriously disrupted the setup process, especially since no two cars feel the same, even down to the brake feel.”
Kulli has acknowledged that for some reason, technical issues have mostly appeared during PCCF weekends this year, and praised the team for working tirelessly to keep the programme alive.
Despite the rough lead-up, Reimann was on fire in Race 1. He made several decisive moves on the opening lap and fought through the field to finish a stunning P6, climbing seven positions from his starting spot.
“That was Alex’s best race performance in any Carrera Cup event we’ve entered,” said Kulli.
“He’s really established himself as a first-lap specialist—over the past six races, he hasn’t gained fewer than five places on the opening lap.”
Reimann himself was also satisfied with the result:
“The start to the weekend definitely wasn’t easy. Mechanical issues limited us to just 13 laps in free practice, so considering that, finishing sixth in Race 1 was a great comeback. Gaining seven positions—I’ll take that!”
Race 2 showed similarly strong pace. Reimann had made it into the top ten before another technical fault forced him to retire.
“It was another really solid drive from Alex,” said Kulli.
“His DNF had nothing to do with driver error. It was one of the strangest and most difficult weekends we’ve ever experienced as a team.”
The strange weekend wasn’t limited to the track. Off-track, an entire set of wheels with new Michelin tyres mysteriously disappeared from the tyre tent, adding to the drama.
Yet despite all the adversity, one thing is clear: Reimann’s form continues to impress, and the future looks bright. Both driver and team now shift full focus to the upcoming Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux round, which takes place at Hungaroring from 4th–6th July.
